What are they teaching these kids?

Today's homework was hilarious (in a it's-either-laugh-or-cry way). From a list, G had to choose an appropriate word to go into each sentence on a worksheet. All fine and well, until I saw the sentences. Who makes these things up?! Do they go through various bits of literature and just grab sentences at random? Or did someone sit down and think: "Hmm, homework for 10 year-olds... I'm sure I could cobble something together..?" I mean come on!

This one looks like it's from a romance novel...Or maybe one of the twilight books.

And this one is just horrifying!

Apart from the fact that it was all rather odd, it's also quite worrying. Yes, I understand that the kids need to learn basic grammar and vocab and whatever this is supposed to teach them. But can we not also expose them to good writing (or at least normal/not about killing peoples' husbands writing) while we're at it? I don't expect everyone to share my passion for reading, writing and all the other glorious stuff that goes with languages, but wouldn't school be a good place to try and awaken at least a little bit of interest in it?
I don't know. All I know is this particular piece of homework is definitely up there in terms of ridiculousness...
